the project

Our church sits at the corner of Poverty & Prosperity.  We have a long history of fighting for social justice in our neighborhood to the east because there is a great need.  Some of our parishioners are aging and we have been running on limited funds for many years.  We have not made any major improvements in the church unless it was life threatening for many years.

We have recently gotten some new parishioners from the burgeoning new neighborhood to our west.  These new parishioners have a lot of resources and want to help, but the need is great.  The impoverished neighborhood to the east is suffering even more now because of aggressive developments.  Many are being displaced and losing touch with their support system.  They need their church more than ever and they need the new neighbors as well as the resources they want to give.

In order to attract more of the new neighbors, we want to make the front of our church more appealing.  We want to give our 150 year-old door a new look that will help create a warm and inviting environment for all.

the steps

The front door is about 12’ wide and 10’ high. It was originally 4 doors, two very large doors that could open wide enough for  caskets, and inside of them were two smaller main doors. The two larger doors no longer work and we only use the man doors. The outside of these doors are in very bad shape due to sun and weather damage. The inside is also in bad shape.

Restoration:

80 hours - $3,000

Painting and Sealing:

16 hours - $1,000

why we're doing it

Our Social Outreach Ministry has devised a plan to take our giving spirit from our front door to the heart of our neighborhood. All of the parishioners AND all of our neighbors  will have an opportunity to join our new association that will provide a social environment. Here we will meet as a group on a regular basis and together enjoy refreshments and listen to speakers or entertainment. During these social gatherings we will learn more from our neighbors about their needs.

Our Needs Ministry will assess these needs and put programs in place that will serve any of our neighbors who are in need. Our Collaboration Ministry will then go out into the city and partner with area organizations, businesses and individuals who can help to sponsor these programs.
