About the project

We are seeking support for our fairly new pop-up workshop program. We want to host 6 workshops in the next year at different locations throughout the city. Past and upcoming locations include Bloomfield, Sewickley, McCandless, Wilkinsburg, Millvale, and Lawrenceville. We want to host future workshops on the West, East, and South sides of the city.

For these workshops, we coordinate with professional writers of all experience levels and genres to provide a diverse curriculum! Past and upcoming workshop topics include feature journalism, character development using vision boards, utilizing voice in poetry, flash fiction, and world-building.

The Steps

Once we have receive funding, Girls Write Pittsburgh will begin matching potential workshop instructors with potential venues. Once the events are booked, we will heavily promote in the neighborhoods where they will be held. The workshops themselves will be 2-3 hours long, and can be about almost anything related to writing!

Why we‘re doing it

We are the city’s only program designed to empower self-identified teen girls through the creative expression of writing, exposing them to a world of opportunity, through the craft. We believe in equal access to creative and artistic opportunities for all! We never want to see a teen miss an opportunity to develop their art due to economic or social barriers. Pop-up workshops are a way for us to reach out to communities that are not included among our weekly workshop locations.
