About the project
Our journey begins in the early morning of May 14, 2021. Survivor's Media founders Paula Gardner and Diego Salazar's niece, Michelle Benavidez (30 year old), was brutally raped and murdered. Michelle's family was devastated and forced to mourn the tragic death of the their beloved daughter, grand daughter, and niece with little to no direction or help from organization whose sole purpose is to provide counsel and grief management solutions. This event sparked a fire within Michelle's family, with Paula Gardner taking it upon herself to organize the community behind a goal of creating a space to mourn, and remember Michelle Benavidez and all victims of violent crime. With the help of the community, Paula was able to organize two murals featuring Michelle's face and other victims of homicide as a reminder that these senseless crimes happen to, not just the victim but, the victim's loved ones. Our goal is to keep the memory of victims alive through the use of multimedia projects designed to tell a story of community members in mourning lost loved ones, educate the public and victim's families about the resources that are available to them after such a tragedy, and spread awareness in an effort to stop these senseless crimes!
Our mission is to provide education and resources to the public and victims of homicide and violent crimes through the use of community murals, documentary series, and our various social media platforms. Please consider donating toward one of our projects, or split your contribution between all of our projects currently in development.

Why we‘re doing it
South Sacramento community is a neighborhood that is neglected both in terms of funding, media and government attention, businesses, and education. We hope this will bring more attention to this community. Likewise, public art will attract locals and visitors to this area, which, in turn, reduces crime and raises pride in residents. In addition, we hope this wall will be an example to the city that legal, permission walls can enhance our city's public art and showcase the talent that we have here. We hope to bring awareness in our community. We hope it'll educate our community of what's happening in our neighborhoods. Originally this was all about painting murals around town and now it's much bigger. We will continue to paint murals but we will also continue to push for a wall to be built with all victims of murders name engraved on that wall.
