About the project

The North Pacific Playground and Garden serve an important role in the Boerum Hill community, which lacks publicly accessible green space. The equipment and ample room for free play are indispensable to families of toddlers and their caregivers, while the back vegetable and flower garden offers a respite from urban life. Over the years, the space has fallen into neglect. However, a group of committed volunteers has recently begun rehabilitating the park, hosting neighborhood work days and reaching out to civic partners to improve safety and sanitation. We are now looking to ramp up our activities. This project would build capacity for the friends group to expand its beautification and greening efforts as well as its support of the Parks Department in ongoing maintenance with a long-term goal of increasing community engagement and programming for greater use.

The Steps

As funds are received, we expect to execute the project in the following three stages:
  • February through April: Identify and procure equipment and supplies as described in the budget.
  • April through October: Host five volunteer work days. Typical projects include weeding, cleaning, planting, mulching, painting, and pruning.
  • Summer and Fall: Host two community outreach activities. These events allow residents to socialize with each other while learning more about the garden and friends group.

Why we‘re doing it

Our goal is to cultivate an urban green space that provides enjoyment for residents and visitors alike while also fostering a sense of community through cultural, social and educational activities. We see ourselves as stewards of the garden who assist the Parks Department with greening and beautification as well as long-term visioning, promote and sponsor community events, and engage residents in a broad range of greening activities. In this increasingly dense neighborhood, the playground and garden are all the more vital to the quality of life of the many socio-economic groups that call Boerum Hill home. Together, we can help the North Pacific Playground and Garden reach their full potential!
