About the project
July 12-16, RealTime Arts (formerly RealTime Interventions) presents the World Premiere of People of Pittsburgh II: The Constellationist— an audio/performance theatrical experience celebrating the life of an extraordinary ordinary Pittsburgher: Mary Helen Carey of Braddock, PA.
For the second installment in our PEOPLE OF PITTSBURGH series, we’ve brought together a core team of award-winning public artists (Arts Commissioner Christine Bethea, Cheryl Capezzuti, and Deavron Dailey) as well as a community devising ensemble of performers from all walks of life– including Mary’s own neighbors, friends and family members– to engage in a unique, live-art performance.
Witness a community in collaboration, gathered to tell the story of one of their own. The Constellationist is part variety show, part listening party, part community gathering– and utterly original.
Your donation will fund a brand-new, Pittsburgh-based work of theater created with the sole purpose of celebrating an extraordinary, ordinary human being. Because everyone, if you look closely enough, is a work of art.
*****
Our Person of Pittsburgh: Mary Carey is a pillar of the Braddock community. An Arts, Culture & Information Facilitator at Braddock Carnegie Library from 2013-2022, she worked to build community through sharing books, art and events. She has helped to create, run, and support numerous Braddock arts and cultural programs both within the library and elsewhere in the community, including the Braddock Community Oven, the Prism Project which showcased art created by prison inmates, and the Braddock Library Art Lending Collection and the Puppet Lending Library. She is on Braddock’s Zoning Board, and continues to tirelessly promote and support cultural and community events throughout the borough.
The Steps
There are so many things your donation will help us with! With your help by July 17th we can:
- Provide transportation to Braddock community members in the show who don't have transportation to and from the performance space every night!
- Make shuttles possible from Braddock PA to our performance space in Lawrenceville every night of the show, for members of the community who'd like to see the show but who don't have transportation!
- Pay for equipment and supplies that'll bring more theater magic to the performance!
- Help subsidize our "pay-what-you-can" tickets for all residents of zip code 15104!
- Help us pay the large team of interviewees and creative collaborators that created this show together!
Why we‘re doing it
Every community is home to people who deserve to be celebrated. But it often seems as if there isn't "enough" to make it happen: not enough time, not enough energy, not enough money, not enough attention.
People of Pittsburgh interrupts this sense of scarcity by carving out time and space for performers, artists, and community members to gather under the star of shared creativity and lift up one of their own.
We imagine that if this could happen more often, our communities might be stronger, our connections to each other might be more vibrant and meaningful, and the individuals who serve as the hearts of our neighborhoods might be more nurtured in the way that they deserve.
That's what we wish for the Braddock community, and that's the aspiration you are supporting through your gift.
