About the project
We are a diverse group of neighbors and local businesses who envisioned a public plaza in front of the Parkside Q Station in Brooklyn. For over 40 years, this space was barren concrete. However, this past spring, with your incredible support, the plaza became a reality! On May 2, 2015, the plaza was officially opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony and speeches from local politicians like Borough President of Brooklyn, Eric Adams and Council Member Mathieu Eugene. We have planted flowers, installed benches, movable tables and chairs and have hosted numerous cultural events with the help of local organizations like PLG Arts. In addition, the plaza has attracted a weekly Grow NYC farmer's market and will continue to host this through November. We hope to continue providing these amenities and events for everyone in our neighborhood! Please help us keep the plaza a part of our community!
The Steps
Prior to the plaza opening on May 2, 2015, we have been working with Neighborhood Plaza Partnerships (NPP) to help us care for the plaza. NPP cleans the plaza, manages the furniture, and takes care of the plants and foliage whether it's watering or re-planting. Their services are critical to making the plaza beautiful for the neighborhood. Our next steps are to continue to utilize the services of NPP so our neighborhood can enjoy the plaza and its flowers, chairs, tables, programming, and farmer's market.
Why we‘re doing it
For decades, the space at Parkside Ave and Ocean Ave has been neglected, wind-swept, sun-burned and underutilized. With your support we opened the plaza this year and transformed our neighborhood. This is our chance to keep it green, beautiful--and an honor to everyone who lives here. The plaza is now a part of our lives and we want our community plaza to continue to be accessible and enjoyable by everyone. The Parkside Plaza would not exist if it weren't for the individual donations from generous community members like yourselves. Some of the funds for the plaza were subsidized in our first year, but will not continue. Whatever you can give, even if it's only a small amount, will go a long way to helping keep our community vibrant! Thank you!
