the project

For years, the area in front of the Parkside Avenue Q train station was underutilized and poorly maintained. But in 2015, after organizing by residents, a local architecture firm completed a makeover of the space, adding flowers, greenery and furniture. Now, the Parkside Plaza is a vibrant gathering place for Flatbush locals and visitors. Over 1,000 people pass through the Plaza daily because of its proximity to public transportation, the entrance to Prospect Park and a variety of businesses. The Plaza is overseen by a diverse group of neighbors, with support from local elected officials, businesses and the Neighborhood Plaza Project.

Since the Parkside Plaza opened in 2015, we’ve worked together to maintain the plaza's infrastructure, hosted family-friendly cultural events( live music, pop-up libraries, a movie night), and have partnered with community organizations to provide much needed resources. Groups we have worked with include PLG Arts, caribBEING, Ifetayo Cultural Arts Academy, The Uni Project, CAMBA and the city's Thrive NYC mental health initiative. We also have worked with many local merchants over the years

Here are some of the exciting new hightlights from 2018:

  • Partnered with caribBEING House to bring Carribean arts and culture to the plaza! Regular events hosted by caribBEING including a pop-up gift shop, the work of Carribean artists including a Jean-Michel Basquiat exhibit, food tastings from local businesses, and dancing/live music.
  • Held a widely attended 3rd anniversary celebration partnering with two live bands, the Uni Project DRAW, Awesome Brooklyn, Loud Baby, D.Vino, Blessings Cafe (now Bonafini), and JJ's Cakes.
  • Hosted music as part of the PLG Arts Music Festival of 2018
  • Partnered with GrowNYC to provide weekly compost and textile recycling which will continue through the winter and beyond
  • Hosted the House of Speakeasy pop-up Bookmobile and Albertine Books with books in French and English (featured in the Haitian Times)

the steps

In 2019, we want to expand our offerings, and find new ways to celebrate the things that make our neighborhood great. We also had a chance to hear from all of you at our anniversary event about what you want to see. We will strive to meet those requests which included: more music, food vendors, outdoor movies, art events,  community services among other ideas.

But we can’t do it without your help. By donating, you ensure the Parkside Plaza remains a safe, fun and vibrant place where Brooklynites can connect, express themselves, find resources they need or simply enjoy the bustle of the neighborhood.

why we're doing it

he Parkside Plaza is more than just a public space. It’s a gathering place, a transit hub and a focal point of our neighborhood. It embodies the diversity, energy and creativity that make Brooklyn--and the people who live here--so special.

We believe strongly that this is a plaza by the community for the community. If anything has shown us the power of the people, it’s that a few neighbors had a vision and with the support and creativity of the community, brought it to life. We are grateful that you all shared the belief that we could create something meaningful and beautiful together.

Ultimately, the Parkside Plaza would not exist if it weren't for the individual donations from generous community members like you. We hope that you will support us in expanding what the Parkside Plaza has to offer and in making sure that it is accessible and enjoyable by everyone for years to come.
