About the project

Paddle Out with Tropical Audubon Society (TAS) is a project that will increase awareness and facilitate data collection on wildlife habitats through monthly kayak excursions at Biscayne Bay and Biscayne National Park over the course of a year. Those who participate will learn about threats to the Bay that impact the people of Miami Dade County (MDC) and the wildlife. Citizen Science will take place during Paddle Out excursions to record wildlife sightings. This data will be part of the research quantifying wildlife activity in the Bay during wet and dry seasons.

We need your support to make this project possible. Special incentives will be offered to participants who donate to the program through this website.

The Steps

TAS will advertise the Paddle Outs on its website and through targeted eblasts. In particular, we target diverse communities in Miami Dade County to experience Biscayne Bay personally. Communications will go to the general public, businesses, and community leadership to participate in our Paddle Out with Tropical Audubon Society program. Beginning this summer, TAS will host kayak trips into Biscayne Bay through launch sites within Biscayne National Park. Guides and kayak equipment will be assembled for each kayak trip, including wildlife identification and recording supplies. Guides will be well informed to speak on the environmental threats to a healthy Biscayne Bay.

Why we‘re doing it

This project addresses the issues from the ‘More Water” campaign bringing attention to the need for freshwater to flow freely through Everglades National Park to Biscayne Bay. Keeping fresh water clean through environmental means is the most cost effective and earth-friendly way to replenish the Biscayne Aquifer serving the fresh water needs of South Florida residents and visitors.

Wildlife data collection will be recorded as part of a larger citizen science project taking place as a long term project at TAS. TAS will monitor the type and number of participants to ensure diverse participation is taking place, adjusting our message and target to be as inclusive as possible.
