Overton Park Playground Improvements

Overton Park Conservancy will implement safety surface improvements in the East Parkway Playground in Overton Park, providing our young park stakeholders with safe opportunities for play and recreation.

Leader

Location

389 East Parkway N. Memphis, TN 38112

About the project

From family reunions to school groups to friends enjoying an afternoon together, kids from all over Memphis love the East Parkway Playground at Overton Park. Over time, the heavy use of this popular park feature has taken a toll. It's time for some repairs and improvements to this well-loved space.

Throughout the playground, areas of safety surfacing are worn, ripped, and missing. Overton Park Conservancy needs funds to repair this surfacing to give kids a soft, safe space to play. We will engage a certified playground safety inspector to purchase the appropriate materials and oversee installation by professionals.

We hope that these improvements will be enjoyed by many Memphis children, and even attract new families to use this great public space!

The Steps

Spring 2016:

  • Raise funds needed for safety surface improvements in Overton Park's East Parkway Playground
  • Work with certified playground inspector to determine areas for repair, prioritize repairs, and prepare repair schedule

Summer 2016:

  • Contract with certified playground inspector
  • Oversee professional installation of playgound safety surface improvements
  • Re-open East Parkway Playground for use and enjoyment by young Memphians

Why we‘re doing it

The East Parkway Playground is a well-loved playground, and as such is in need of repairs and improvements.  As the crown jewel of the Memphis park system, Overton Park serves a diverse population of Memphians.  This playground serves as a place for active play for thousands of young Memphians, and our goal is to provide children with a safe playground for their recreation activities.  We have seen a dramatic increase in park use in the last four years; this increase has resulted in worn surfaces that require maintenance and upkeep.  We hope to raise the funds necessary to implement these much-needed repairs and improvements.
