About the project
Open Streets Cleveland temporarily closes segments of streets to cars and opens them up for people-powered movement such as biking, walking, jogging, dancing, and more! Open streets are transformative events that celebrate the unique assets of Cleveland neighborhoods while advancing a cultural movement of sustainable transportation and health. These events reclaim the roads as public space that can and should be used by people and provide a safe, fun space to try new things!
Open streets will close various routes of 1 to 3 miles on Sunday afternoons once a month throughout the summer, allowing Cleveland neighborhoods to be connected with car-free streets and nodes of activities to stop and enjoy!
May--Detroit Shoreway/Ohio City
June--Central
July--Glenville/University Circle
August--Clark-Fulton
The Steps
To make Open Streets a reality the following steps will happen:
- Engage with stakeholders in neighborhoods
- Confirm the neighborhoods that will host 2018 events
- Finalize event routes
- Finalize event dates
- Schedule activities and programming on the open streets
- Promote to neighbors and other participants!
Why we‘re doing it
Open Streets connects Cleveland in a unique way by providing opportunities for people to get out and get active in their streets! These events create a culture of health and sustainability by getting cars off the streets and allowing people to get moving! With an emphasis on sustainable transportation, Open Streets can assist with carbon reduction and teach people new ways to travel on their streets.
