the project

In the spring of 2020, neighbors in Old Brooklyn began learning that the City of Cleveland’s curbside recycling program had been suspended. Materials placed in household blue bins were being taken to the town dump. In the absence of this city service we asked, what would it look like to work together and take responsibility for our own waste reduction? How could we be better stewards of our resources and our neighborhoods?

We were astonished to learn how many independent services for recycling and reuse already existed - it was a matter of how to replace a trip to your curb with an alternative nearly as accessible.

Old Brooklyn Recycles was formed and established a drop off site for seven different materials in conjunction with Metropolitan Coffee, Aluminum Cans for Burned Children, Refill Goodness, Better World Refill, Tremont Clean Garbage Recycling, the Old Brooklyn Community Development Corporation and the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District. This program is now expanding to more locations and more in-person education events thanks to you and sponser like the Lorax Grant, Neighborhood Up and the Cleveland Foundation.

the steps

Our teammates are our neighbors. We're getting out into the community to educate each other about opportunities for Waste Reduction and Recycling. We're excited to participate in community events including the Old Brooklyn Farmer's Market and Treadway Takeover. We're encouraging neighbors to sign up to be recycling block reps, drop off their compost with Ben Franklin Community Garden, or win a backyard composter of their very own.

Funds raised will be used to purchase a larger aluminum can collection bin for Metropolitan Coffee and establish a second drop-off site in Old Brooklyn for items like plastics, glass and harder to recycle materials.

If you have a sustainability project you want to see in the community, don't hesitate to tell us about it at and get involved! You can also follow Old Brooklyn Recycles at

why we're doing it

Waste reduction and effective recycling helps protect our environment by reducing contamination, reducing energy consumption, and keeping trash from expanding landfills. Did you know that the location of landfills has propelled the environmental justice movement? Read more here:  We can work to own the costs of our consumption, reducing the damage done to communities near landfills, protecting our shared earth, and signaling to corporations and governments that sustainability initiatives are a priority.
