About the project
The Old Brooklyn Community Mural project aims to bring our community together to create a lasting, visible work of art while helping to promote optimism during the current health crisis.
The mural's design was inspired by the vibrant life and surroundings in Old Brooklyn include the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, Brookside Reservation, and the Pedal for Prizes event. The depictions of outdoor activities are woven into the neighborhood's initials, "OB" and the geometric shapes are inspired by the Old Brooklyn flag.
The mural will be painted at 4196 Pearl Road, directly facing what has become a popular neighborhood gathering place and the site of the Old Brooklyn Farmer's Market.
Our commissioned artist, Bernadette Glorioso, brainstormed an innovative approach to engaging community residents in the creation of this mural while ensuring health and safety. To maintain social distancing, participants will work separately, some painting on the wall and others painting on boards. They will ultimately see all their efforts come together in four parts of the finished mural.
The Steps
- Purchase materials, such as paint, boards, varnish, brushes, PPE
- Prepare surfaces and grid design. The mural is broken up into four parts. Two parts on the exterior wall and two parts on board. The four parts come together to create an "O" depicting a person walking a dog and the "B" representing a bicycle.
- Engage residents in the actual painting of the mural over the course of months. The large scale mural will be painted similar to a paint-by-number process.
Why we‘re doing it
Our community needs opportunities to gather together and create beauty and excitement during this crisis.
By involving residents in the creation of this mural, this project will instill civic pride in Old Brooklyn's vibrancy and family-oriented neighborhood during these difficult times.
Residents will have the opportunity to color in sections of the design and see how their work contributes to the whole vision for the mural, and how their involvement contributes to the greater good of Old Brooklyn.
The desired end result of this project is the creation of a long-standing work of inspirational art- providing inspiration by its end result but also by the process that brings it to that finished point.
