About the project

This is the fifth year for Ohio City Spring Jam. We always try to incorporate a theme and this year the theme is story telling. What's on the minds of our youth that they would like to share? How do they view their community? How do they view themselves fitting into the community?

We will take the youth on field trips to places like WEWS News Channel 5 to explore the studio and to learn about journalism, they'll be encouraged throughout the week to think about what type of story they want to write, who they want to interview from the community, and what they'll report on. The youth will also have the opportunity to enjoy nature and learn about how fun and important it is to care for the planet at the Cleveland Metroparks.

Everyone will be fed every day from local businesses in and near Ohio City.

The Steps

The day will run from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm. We'll have lunch from 11am-12pm and move on to the activity for the day. Snacks will be available during the day and at the end of the day before the youth return home.

Here's a schedule for the week:

  • Monday - First-day sign-ups; Play Stations (relay races, STEM learning activities, sports)
  • Tuesday - Field trip to Radio / TV broadcasting studio tour
  • Wednesday - Field trip to Cleveland Metroparks Canalway Center; Brainstorming story ideas
  • Thursday - Community Interviews; Story writing and reporting in front of the camera
  • Friday - Fun Day! Field trip to I-X Indoor Amusement Park

Why we‘re doing it

Ohio City Inc strives to fill gaps for as many Ohio City residents as possible. While the Community Center is closed during the youth's Spring Break, we are proud to take on the responsibility of providing programming that is enriching and engaging. Exposure is pertinent to the development of all children and if we can share our resources, we know we are creating memories that they will be able to loo back on and appreciate late in life.
