the steps

Did you know that children that cannot read proficiently by the end of 4 th grade are four times more likely to leave high school without a diploma? Students in large urban districts, like Cleveland, are at a greater risk because often they begin school knowing 30 MILLION fewer words than their suburban peers. My name is Michelle Person and I am a local elementary school principal and the founder of Just Like Me Books (JLM). JLM is a multi media production and development company that stresses the importance of literacy, while simultaneously providing readers with the ability discover and create culturally relevant reading material. Though we have several programs in schools that work to address these deficiencies, we recognize that focusing only on schools limits our reach and doesn’t address the full scope of the problem. In order to elicit a lasting and sustainable impact we need to think outside the box.

why we're doing it

WHAT WE'RE ABOUT

Children that cannot read proficiently by the end of 4th grade are four-times more likely to leave school without a diploma. Students in large urban districts, like Cleveland, are at a greater risk because they often begin school with 30 MILLION fewer words than their suburban peers. If a student reads for 20 minutes daily, they will hear 1.8 million words per year.
