About the project
Community Ice Skating returns to Oakwood Park after many decades! The City of Lorain through the support of Mayor Bradley and Lori Garcia, will install a new 100'x200' outdoor ice skating rink inside of Field #2 (across from pool). This fundraiser led by the Friends of South Lorain aims at raising $2,000 to allow for the purchase of ice skates for the boys and girls of our community. The skates will be rented at no cost during various community nights planned for the months of January and February. Thirty-eight skates are estimated at $1,500. $500 is earmarked to purchase a large tent to keep the participants warm.
The Steps
1. Purchase skates and tents in December to be ready for use in January
2. Plan community skating nights for January and February
3. Rent skates at no cost during community nights to youth throughout Lorain
4. Assess our impact and plan to sustain similar impactful programming throughout the year
Why we‘re doing it
The reason is very simple. This area of the city of Lorain has been underserved for many years. Many of the families living in the census tracts surrounding the park face financial hardship and do not have the resources to purchase skates for their children. This program will assure that ALL KIDS, low-income or not, will have the opportunity to enjoy this brand new ice skating rink. Our goal is to bring joy and happiness to all children and families during the upcoming Holiday Season!
