About the project
Keep a track of updates on this project here.
Dancewave, a non-profit dance education center in Brooklyn, NY whose mission is to transform lives through dance, seeks to raise $10,000 to renovate the facade of its new location - 182 4th Avenue. Our goal is to raise funds to renovate the exterior of our new studio space and lend a “New Face” to our favorite Brooklyn neighborhood. Fourth Avenue, a mixed commercial/residential space, is fast becoming the epicenter of renewed cultural life in the Gowanus/Downtown Brooklyn area. With the help of the community, we seek to revive the exterior facade of our new home and bring some much needed color and vibrancy to the neighborhood. The facade sits on 4th Avenue, right at the corner of DeGraw Street; it is nestled between a gas station and across from a vacant industrial building. Having already raised $20,000 in support from the Mertz Gilmore Foundation to transform the interior space from a cold, commercial warehouse into a bright dance studio, the exterior finishings and related upgrades will complete this project. Your support will help us as we develop a fully-fledged dance and performance space, supporting the cultural arts community on 4th Avenue.
The Steps
This project builds on an ongoing effort to create a new home for Dancewave on 4th Avenue. The funds to improve the exterior of the building would help us add colorful, bright and vibrant signage and window treatments to the entrance so that we can depict energy, vibrancy and the Brooklyn spirit. In addition, the funds would help us set up a security system and exterior lighting that will help staff and students feel safe and be a beacon on the dark corner. The renovation of the interior space has already begun thanks to a generous donation of $20,000 by the Mertz Gilmore Foundation. We are now able to provide access to the inside studio space to neighborhood artists and dance enthusiasts (at low, subsidized rental rates) and our own diverse student body.
