the project

The fund will provide immediate emergency relief of up to $500 to professional musicians to compensate short term for income lost through unemployment and cancellations. A majority of the musicians we support – creatives who make virtually all of their income through either the gig economy or the bar and restaurant industry – have faced catastrophic earnings loss through the COVID-19 crisis. Many support families with children and few have any significant reserves or other forms of financial support. Unemployment provides only partial relief at best, and with significant delays.

the steps

We have gathered a committee of knowledgeble and experienced music industry professionals, who will review each application. We have put together clear guidelines for how funds will be distributed: we will primarily support full-time professional musicians who live in Cuyahoga County and are facing financial hardship because of closings and cancellations caused by COVID-19. Now we just need some more resources to help support the fund -- because demand is so much higher than even we'd anticipated. 

why we're doing it

We're launching this fund right now because we love music, and we care about the artists who make it. We know how many professional musicians make their living performing -- and now that living has been cut out from under them. As hard as things are right now, we're looking forward to better times, when this is over and we can all come together again to celebrate in our favorite clubs and venues, with our favorite bands. 

We're also doing this because investing in the NEO Music Relief Fund is not only the right thing to do right now – it’s the right way to build for the future. In line with our shared mission to support the musicians and the creative economy in our region, we will be developing capacity and infrastructure to ensure that local music can continue to thrive because the artists who make it and the venues that support it continue to thrive.

All of the funds will go directly to musicians to help cover urgent expenses for housing, utilities, food and health care. We know there will be more requests for support than we can respond to, but we're going to launch our fund with as many resources as we gather. Every little bit counts!
