Music Industry Careers Panel - BOTT

A panel discussion that will feature key representatives from the Cleveland music scene and focus on pathways to careers in the non-performance fields of the broader music industry presented by Battle of the Teal.

Leader

Katherine Cade

Location

Madison Ave Cleveland, OH 44102

About the project

Our story began with an intention to offer panel forums with the goal to bring together local artists who can share their experience, thoughts, expertise and advice with the communities we serve through our Battle of the Teal art program. Local professional and aspiring artists see the value in keeping up with the industry trends and could use the forums as a creative outlet to toss around new ideas and perhaps forming new collaboration(s).

We also understand that there is a need to support our local community artists by providing them with the opportunities to earn their living while achieving their goals as professionals. The acknowledgment, respect, and hard work of practice need to be rewarded and appreciated. The raised funds will be used towards providing panelists’ stipends.

This project will culminate in a 1 to a 1.5-hour-long panel discussion about pathways to careers in the non-performing fields of the music industry with an emphasis on the interdisciplinary nature of these fields and how they support one another and artists/bands. This discussion will be useful to anyone considering a career in the music industry, including performing artists interested in learning more about what goes on "behind the scenes." The panelists for this discussion are:

Heath Gmucs (owner, Wax Mage Records/ Supervisor, Gotta Groove Records)

Dave Polster (audio engineer, Well Made Music)

Wallace Settles (booking/promotions/venue operations, Grog Shop/ Owner, Dirty Jones Productions)

Why we‘re doing it

After so many years of serving the kids we see the importance and the value that mentors, panelists, and other art professionals bring to the table…they are professionals, they have their worth, their time is worth something, their passion is worth something and we want to show them how much we care. They are part of our community and this is our way to support them. By exploring some career options within manufacturing, retail, marketing, and audio, we hope to inspire and encourage people who may (or may not have been previously) be interested in a career in the music industry here in Cleveland and beyond. The music industry is a vital part of the economy in Cleveland and the whole world; the global pandemic has forced massive hardships on this industry which will need a talented workforce to forge its future in the years to come. Through this panel discussion, we hope to clarify career pathways and open up a dialogue that presents these careers as essential jobs that are both valuable and rewarding.
