the project

We, Los Amigos de Moore, are a group of seniors from the BronxWorks E. Robert Moore Neighborhood Senior Center who are dedicated to educating our community about healthy food, growing fresh vegetables and herbs, and beautifying our community thorugh gardening. Through this project, we will maintain and expand the garden at E. Robert Moore Senior Center located in Mott Haven in the Moore Houses. We will also host "Food Talks" a cooking program in which we demonstrate how to prepare healthy food using garden fresh ingredients while celebrating flavors of our unique cultures.

Los Amigos are seeking volunteers to help out in our garden, click "Inquire About Volunteering" on the sidebar for more information.

the steps

1. Add protective netting to the garden boxes that are already in place at the Senior Center. This will prevent birds, squirrels, and other animals from accessing the delicious garden items. (Early March 2018)
2. Add compost to the soil. (Early March 2018)
3. Purchase seeds and begin starter plants indoors. (Early April 2018)
4. Plant all items in the garden. (Early May - depending on the plant variety)
5. Host at least 3 volunteer days throughout the growing season. (May 2018 - September 2018)
6. Host 10 "Food Talks". (May 2018 - December 2018)

El Plan

6. Presenta 10 "Food Talks". (Mayo de 2018 - diciembre de 2018)

why we're doing it

The Mott Haven community is characterized by a lack of healthy food options. Los Amigos de Moore seek to address this by increasing awareness and knowledge of health among ourselves and in our community. Los Amigos see ourselves as leaders in the community who have the power to make change by educating, building connections, and beautifying the area. In the past, we have created a cookbook featuring our favorite traditional healthy foods. You can download it free HERE. Please help support us in our efforts!

Puedes descargarlo gratis. ¡Ayúdenos a apoyarnos en nuestros esfuerzos!

updates

Goodbye snow, hello spring!

Los Amigos are busy bees! In the time since we began this fundraiser, the seniors have completed FOUR cooking demos! They have cooked beet quesadillas, butternut squash soup, fruit and spinach smoothies, and their classic sofrito! They have done cooking demos for all ages, from middle schoolers at Betances Community Center to other seniors at their center. They have learned more about nutrition through cooking and teaching others.

Additionally, they have planted the starter seeds for their garden at Riverbank State Park inside of a greenhouse. This way the plants can begin growing despite the uncertain weather. The group will plant these starters in their garden in the beginning of May. Next week, soil and compost will be delivered to the garden and the beds will be prepped before the starters are planted.

The seniors would like to send a heartfelt "thank you" to all of the donors. It is because of your generosity that they have been able to continue doing such great work in the community!
