the project
We are holding a series of family-friendly planting days open to all MDW residents. We will offer plants to anyone who wants to plant them in tree beds or planters that day and provide assistance with planting.
the steps
With the assistance of the Parks Department, we have selected both annuals and perennials that are appropriate for tree bed planting. We have also purchased the tools and other supplies we need.
Our first planting day was Saturday, May 14, from 11 am to 3 pm. Additional planting days will be scheduled based on plant deliveries and installation of the remaining tree guards.
why we're doing it
We are fortunate to live on a lovely block that could be a lot lovelier with some effort by the residents. Having well-maintained green spaces is a source of pride and improves everyone’s quality of life. Moreover, by opening up the tree beds and properly maintaining them, we are helping ensure the long-term health of the trees on our block.
We hope to build a community that will work together to further improve the quality of life on our street, if not our neighborhood. We also hope our work will serve as a model and inspire other blocks to undertake similar projects.

Our spring and fall planting project is fully funded! We are gratified and a bit awed by the generosity and enthusiam of our donors and volunteers. Rest assured, we are continuing to work hard to put the finishing touches on almost all of the beds and to create a beautiful, environmentally sound and community-minded block.
