Memphis BioFuels Initiative
We would like to increase our production capacity as well as reduce our labor costs by purchasing an automated biodiesel processor. This new processor will allow us to provide locally sourced biofuels in Memphis.

About the project
Smart Mule Urban Farms, a member of North Memphis Farmers Collective, has been collecting and repurposing waste vegetable oil (WVO) from multiple restaurants around Memphis for years. Our existing processing unit is a DIY-style home scale refinery built from recovered parts found around town. The fuel produced is used for our trucks and tractor that we use in our efforts to cultivate abandoned urban lots for food and habitat.
The Steps
Once the funds are acquired, we will purchase the biodiesel refinery to be used as part of the collective in order to futher our efforts to reduce the NMFC carbon footprint, provide healthy food, and repurpose waste streams in our city.
Why we‘re doing it
We are filling a need for locally produced, cheap, alternative fuel sources in Memphis. By doing this, we are recycling cooking grease, producing biofuels, and powering our equipment with a clean burning alternative.
