About the project

We want to plant an apple orchard on the grounds of Memory Lane--a day service program for those with Alzheimer's and other forms of Dementia.  The trees would be planted, along with a small plaque, in honor of loved ones lost to this horrible disease.

The lot Memory Lane sits on is large lot and is open to the elements; the trees would act as a wind break, reduce water runoff and would offer color and beauty to an area of the city that is often overlooked.

Produce from the trees will be shared with the participants of the program with remaining produce donated to the food shelf and soup ktichen run through the same agency that operates Memory Lane.

The Steps

The site plan has already been completed.  We will need to prepare the ground, purchase and plant the trees and purchase and install the plaques.  The orchard will have ongoing maintenance with watering, cultivating the soil around the trees and watching for insects.  The complete project will take approximately three years, since the trees will need to mature we are able to harvest fruit.

Why we‘re doing it

There are multiple reasons for doing this project.  When Memory Lane moved to its current location (NWCSA purchased the building and property specifically for the Alzheimer's/Dementia program) it was clear we would need to do some landscaping to reduce water runoff.
