the project

Our Mission at Melrose New Generation Garden is to create a space for community residents to garden and to work together for the community enrichment and to involve youth in gardening as well to eat healthy and fresh; it is the hope of the Garden that everyone will feel comfortable and welcome when they are in the garden. A Garden experience should be positive for gardeners and visitors alike.

This year we would like to host a Farmers  Market to provide more healthy and organic local food to our community. Our corner stores are small convenience stores that have no more than two cash registers and sell a variety of mostly non-perishable grocery items. Green Carts are mobile produce carts that have green cart permits, can only sell fresh, unprocessed fruits and vegetables, and vend in designated areas of New York City.

the steps

In addition to the Youth Run Market, we will host cooking demos to teach our community how to eat healthy and locally. The kids that work in the garden to grow veggies, herbs and fruits will learn how to start a Farmers Market in their community; they will grow their own food plus get Health Buck gift certificates to give to their family so they can shop at our Market.

why we're doing it

Our garden is in a mostly low-income community with little access to outdoor events or summer events in the community without free or low-cost places to go and enjoy in the summer days. The Melrose New Generation Garden was developed in 2012 as an NYC Mayor’s Anti-Obesity Task Force flagging Melrose with troubling statistics showing 14.5 % Obese Children and the number of Adults Overweight or Obese skyrocketed in the past three years alone.
