the project
The Quiet Time Program is a distinctive part of the BUGS culture when twice per day the school falls silent and staff and students clear their minds, reset, and prepare for learning and being their best. Due to generous start-up support from the David Lynch Foundation, the Quiet Time Program has been up and running at BUGS since the school's opening in 2013, but now we must contribute to the costs of this program for full-time and part-time Quiet Time staff at BUGS. Quiet Time Site Leader Sarah Rose and Joshua Pittman provide meditation trainings for students and staff, "tune ups" and a place for students to go one-on-one or in groups to re-set themselves if they are having a bad day, and oversight around consistency of the program in every classroom schoolwide.
David Lynch Foundation also provides special events and incentives (including an end of year trip) for students, and two staff meditation retreats each year (one in New York City, and one upstate) which rejuvenate the BUGS staff, connect us to each other, and allow us to "water the root" so that we can give to the students every day in a sustainable way.
the steps
We need to raise $10,000 by June 30, 2017 to support the Quiet Time program at BUGS.
Give what you can and spread the word to others you know who might support this life skill gift to our students!
why we're doing it
Adolescence is a time of great transition mentally, physically, socially and academically. The Quiet Time Program at BUGS provides students with twice per day moments of quiet or meditation to check in with their changing selves, reset and recharge, getting grounded in their sense of self at a time of great self-change.
Groundbreaking research on schools with a Quiet Time program has found:
- 10% improvement in test scores—and a narrowing of the achievement gap
- Highly effective for increasing creativity
- Improved teacher retention and reduced teacher burnout
- Greater happiness, focus and self-confidence
- Reduced ADHD symptoms and symptoms of other learning disorders
- 86% reduction in suspensions over two years
- 40% reduction in psychological distress, including stress, anxiety and depression
