the project
The Mayday Festival of Resistance is a free concert and party in Bushwick, Brooklyn at Maria Hernandez Park that celebrates the powerful movements working towards positive transformative social change. Through art, dance, and music we are creating a joyous event that shows inclusive, empowering political culture. The festival will lift up the people and organizations fighting for a more equitable NYC in the face of our xenophobic, racist and sexist political climate. We will showcase inspiring artists-activists that are using music to spread messages of hope and resistance.
The success of our project will be measured in two ways:
1. Having a large turnout. Our goal is to have 300‑400 people attend the Festival. We believe this is a realistic and ideal number for the size of the park space and the volunteer capacity we’re harnessing.
2. Growing Mayday’s volunteer group. In the lead up to and post-Festival, we’ll measure success by how many people continue organizing and working with Mayday Space. Our ultimate goal is to have a large base of volunteers who continue to co-create and grow Mayday programs, events, and classes.
the steps
The Mayday Programming Team is led by 4 core volunteers that have built out an initial volunteer committee of 15 people to help us conduct outreach, project planning, and to pulling off the Festival itself. We will be targeting local businesses and sharing our flier every week starting on March 10th. We will be attending our monthly community board meeting to share updates and recruit volunteers from there. We will also reach out to local schools and at other community events leading up to April 28th. Some of the businesses we are already recruiting and will continue to do so include bodegas, laundromats, barbershops/hair salons, latin american restaurants. We will also do extensive outreach on our two main commercial avenues-- Knickerbocker Ave and Wyckoff Ave.
why we're doing it
We believe the current political climate has created a culture of hate that is targeted at immigrants and fueling racial animosity. In the face of this crisis, Mayday will create a joyous, celebratory event that highlights the victories of the immigrant rights movements and encourage more people to join in the effort.
This year’s festival will uplift the work of women in our movements. In particular, the #Metoo movement has brought attention to the struggle against the larger culture of patriarchy and sexism. Our line up of powerful, inspiring women and Native and Latinx activist-musicians is a recognition and tribute to the women who are the backbones of our communities.

Artist, Leah Danze, donates art proceeds to our fundraiser!
Posted 03/12/2018 - 11:48am
Leah Danze, a friend, artist, and supporter of Mayday is donating the majority of the proceeds from her art to support the Mayday Festival of Resistance! Reach out to Leah via her instagram, https://www.instagram.com/danzdance/, to see her prints or email her Lcdanze@hotmail.com if you’re interested in buying a piece. They're each $15-35 sliding scale. The prints are 15" x 22" and they were all hand printed by Leah.
More on Leah and her art: "This linocut was made in honor of community and connection. While Leah carved the image last year, it wasn’t until a few days ago that the linocut was hand printed thanks to the help of a few friends. leah seeks out art projects that are collaborative and community oriented and especially enjoys making art outside. reach out to her if you want to connect and create together!"
Thank you Leah, for your work, your art, and everything you do for Mayday Space!
Our headliner is Nitty Scott!
Posted 03/09/2018 - 10:20am
Today we recieved the final design of our official flyer and are happy to announce that our official headline will be Nitty Scott!
More on Nitty: On her new album Creature!, Nitty Scott sketches a universe where Afro-Latinas belong. Her new album is a storybook narrative that easily fits into the genre of magical realism, as told by an Afro-Boricua americana. The 13-track project collides Afro-Caribbean percussion, island field recordings, and dense 808s into a rich proclamation of self. Nitty says Creature! is something she identifies with because “the word itself kind of translates into being undefinable,” she explains in a phone interview with Remezcla. “I’m owning and discussing the experience of being Afro-Boricua, woman, bisexual, then bruja.”

Two of our four music acts are confirmed!

We have two of our four music acts confirmed! We'll post another update in a week announcing our other act and our headliner. Stay tuned and thanks so much for your support so far!
M.A.K.U. Soundsystem
"The group seeks to capture the mix of apprehension and optimism that drives the immigrant experience, and in mixing Latin American rhythms, call and response vocals, soulful horns, and jazzy organ swirls, they end up in a place that might just remind you of the late great Afropop pioneer Fela Kuti… though if you’re old enough (like me) to remember New York in the 70s, the band’s sound may recall earlier soul/funk/Latin bands like Mandrill" - John Schaefer, WNYC Weekly Roundup
NECIA NYC
NECIA NYC is an all femme-fronted punks of color band !! We’ll be announcing our other two acts this week. for now, Peep their latest single Prayer: Punching Nazis
