About the project

In Pennsylvania specifically, a large disparity exists between white and African American women for maternal mortality. Unfortunately, mortality is just the tip of the iceberg: for every woman who dies, there are more women who just barely survive. These disparities are overwhelming, Black babies in Allegheny County die before the age of 1 at a rate over 5 times that of white babies. Black women in Pittsburgh die from pregnancy and childbirth related complications at a rate higher than 97 percent of similar cities. Unshakeable Motherhood and our fiscally sponsored sister arms (partner with New Sun Rising). The Steps

How can you help?

We would like to extend the support by using the Ioby crowdfund to be an addition to our efforts in raising the training funding needed to equip more birth, postpartum and midwifery training in order to build up the maternal workforce in Allegheny County..  As we would like to carve diverse modules of care that could be offered in low-income Pittsburgh communities.

Why we‘re doing it

We would like to create a birth workforce that will center on innovative community-based modules of care that will be adopted in low resourced communities.  We would like to ensure that our organizations continue raising up future birth workers as well as midwives.  As we work to build guiding principles sought to incorporate in creating an effective community based module of care. As we unify each autonomous organization that are primarily black woman led and community led approaches to address social and structural determinants of health to improve infant and mortality rates for Black babies, Black women and Black birthing people in Allegheny County.

We hope with your additional support to this fundraising project will offer different levels of support to high risk pregnant women and birthing folks to ensure that they are educated early on and provide consistent support in prenatal care stages, promote healthy lifestyle behavior and access to needed health support.
