the project

In solidarity with the March on Washington, members of the Richmond, Virginia community are coming together for a social justice march, March on Monument, on Saturday, January 14th from 1-3 p.m. We will peacefully assemble as one diverse and inclusive community to send a message that Richmonders are standing up for those in danger of oppression and being marginalized. We aim to galvanize our diverse community and move forward in positive action together. We will walk on Monument Avenue from the Lee statue (at Monument and N. Allen) to Boulevard beginning at 1 p.m.

In the words of the Women’s March on Washington organizers, “We stand together in solidarity with our partners and children for the protection of our rights, our safety, our health, and our families – recognizing that our vibrant and diverse communities are the strength of our country. The rhetoric of the past election cycle has insulted, demonize and threatened many of us – women, immigrants of all statuses, those with diverse religious faiths, particularly Muslim, people who identify as LGBTQIA, Native and Indigenous people, Black and Brown people, people with disabilities, the economically impoverished and the survivors of sexual assault. We are confronted with the question of how to move forward in the face of national and international concern and fear. In the spirit of democracy and honoring the champions of human rights, dignity and justice who have come before us, we join in diversity to show our presence in numbers too great to ignore. The March on Washington will send a bold message to our new administration, and the world that women’s rights are human rights. We stand together recognizing that defending the most marginalized among us is defending all of us.”

the steps

We aim to fundraise for the permits required for our march to give to the Richmond Police Department and other cost associated with the march. We cannot march without the permits and we cannot have the permits without the funds. We need your help to make this happen!

why we're doing it

In addition to marching as one, we are asking local community groups and nonprofit organizations to come out and provide opportunities for the community to learn more about their efforts, meet, share, network and partner to increase our strength. In addition, for the many citizens who cannot get to DC to march and make a statement on a national level, this march will provide a local platform that is accessible, where area Richmond families and neighbors can march together, where children can march with their parents, and where our voices can create change in our local community together. This is an inclusive march and ALL supporters are invited.
