Workday #1 - June 14

the project

Check out our 2023 ioby and see the work we've done! ioby.org/project/que-rico-market-csa

Mapes Avenue Garden is an intergenerational safe space for the Crotona Community. Mapes Avenue Garden Rebuild is series of workday that will take place early Summer 2022. We are repairing all the vegetable beds, installing a compost system, purchasing garden equipment and fund community education workshops.

the steps

  • First we will focus on repairing all the vegetable beds - late May early June.
  • Next we will partner with Green Feen Organic to educate the community about Bokashi composting and install a new compost system.
  • Through out July and August, we will bring in local artists to do workshops in the garden.
  • Along the way we hope to refence the flower garden at the entrance and have a cookout or two.

why we're doing it

There is no-one really teaching youth about nature, conservation efforts or providing a safe place for them to interact with our elders. We live in a crowded, concrete jungle, where hungry developers are out on the prowl for vacant property. That is why it is very important to properly manage community gardens. Mapes Avenue Garden has historically been deeply rooted in neighborhood development and advocacy. I enjoy gardening and see what a difference community advocacy can make in our environment. I want to preserve this garden for the next generation, thank you for your support.
