About the project

Opa-locka’s Magnolia North Neighborhood has been selected by KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit that envisions a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America to serve as the location of a Community Built Playground Project. In order to receive the playground, our project team must raise a total of $8,500 towards the Kaboom playground by December 2013 as well as additional money to cover associated costs. We are all very excited to have this opportunity bought to the Magnolia North Neighborhood which will ultimately provide a safe play space for our kids.

Over the past year, residents of Magnolia North have expressed their concerns for a safe place for our youth to play. These concerns have led to community driven initiatives such as the Pop Up Park which promotes living an active and healthy lifestyle until permanent park space could be located in Magnolia North and now a Kaboom Playground build which fills the void of access to public park space. Through the Collective efforts of residents, the City of Opa-locka, South Florida Regional Planning Council (SFRPC), the Opa-locka Community Development Corporation (OLCDC), and sponsors we have been granted this special opportunity to improve recreational activity through a community built playground for our kids.

The Steps

The site where the playground will be placed is 2123 Ali Baba Ave, which is currently a vacant lot. The actual playground build will take place in the month of January, 2014 on a date TBD and will require the efforts of the residents of the Magnolia North Neighborhood. Prior to the build day, we will host a design day arranged in the month of November, 2013 on a date TBD where youth and adults from the neighborhood will collectively design the Playground. We encourage all community supporters to extend their participation and leadership as we all work together to ensure this projects success. We will began recruiting volunteers shortly to serve on the numerous committees of the Kaboom Playground project, in addition to volunteers to help with the playground build in January.

Why we‘re doing it

There is no playground or green space in the Magnolia North Neighborhood. Kids lack access to near public, green, and playground space. As a result of not having a park in the neighborhood kids are forced to play in the streets in front of their homes. An Open public playground will enable community involvement and interaction, as well as provide a safe place within walking distance for the kids of the Magnolia North community to play.
