the project

Lush Yummies Pie Company is built on family traditions and family recipes. We make some of the best “Lemon Butta” pies filled with rich and creamy sweet-melted butter, cascading with fresh squeezed lemon juice, and warm cinnamon and sugar. We're close to having our pies on the shelves of 15 stores and counting and we are already a regular vendor at Eastern Market every Saturday but, we have one small problem. On average we squeeze 200 lemons by hand per week for our pies. This means that we spend 8 hours a week squeezing lemons which slows down our production enabling us to meet our demands. We need a JBT commercial juicer which not only squeezes our lemons but it even peels them prior to squeezing! This would save us 6 hours of prep and production time,  and in return we have more time to make more pies!

Hi! I'm Jennifer and I've spent the last 4 years planning on how I could use my talents from Howard University and Culinary school in combination with my family’s recipes. After folks taste my “Lemon Butta” Pie, they usually say “these taste just like the pies that my mother used to make”. Its like the pies ignite a spark that is full of memories and love, I want to be able to continue to share this feeling throughout the city of Detroit.

the steps

We have some amazing support in the form of family, friends, and loyal customers who have helped to cultivate a community of Lemon Butta Pie lovers! From this community, many folks have stepped up to become Pie Ambassadors! Pie Ambassadors have a few responsibilities (1) Raise $100-$200 towards the campaign, and (2) volunteer at our donor “Thank You” party. The “Thank You” party will take place March 12th, 2017.

In addition, we will be popping up at as many events that we can get our hands on to donate pie and collect donations throughout the 30 days of our campaign. Once we have reached our goal, we will proceed in purchasing our JBT juicer! If we surpass our goal, we will we will purchase a new pie cart to use at Eastern Market and grocery store demos!

why we're doing it

Lush Yummies Pie Company is currently a small business with big dreams!  We currently have two employees; however, with our rapid growth we will quickly need more employees. To show our growth, our pies are currently sold at the following places: We are an Eastern Market Saturday Vendor, our pies are sold at Westborn Berkley, Westborn Dearborn, and soon Westborn Livonia. We have also been accepted to Whole Foods Detroit. Lastly, we are in conversations to secure 30 additional accounts by summer 17.

As a business owner, I have faced many challenges in my personal and professional experience, and these experiences have helped to teach me how to run a successful and thriving business. As a business owner I am first excited to be able to provide quality jobs through my families pies to my Detroit community.

This spring, ioby and Eastern Market are partnering to present the Eastern Market Growing Communities Matching Grant Challenge. We’re offering 17 awesome local food entrepreneurs the chance to double the donations made to their projects on ioby’s website between now and April 3—dollar for dollar, up to $250 per donation, and up to $3,000 total. Here’s a closer look at one of fabulous projects getting underway now.

Lush Yummies Pie Company makes delicious “lemon butta” pies using founder Jennifer Lyle’s grandfather’s recipe, fresh ingredients, and lots of love. But she thinks there’s another reason Detroiters go gaga for the velvety citrus treats: they’re reminders of home.
