The Lot at 1830 Activation

Changing hearts and minds, through culinary, artistic and positive experiences.

About the project

Located right off of Del Paso Blvd. sits a 125 parking stall lot, for the last 5 years it has sat empty, adding to the number of underutilized properties in the area. Our goal is to turn that space into a community park and offer different events 2 to 3 times a month for summer and fall 2022.

With these donations we will be able to further beautify and activate the lot and adjacent building to give the community a place to come together. Previously, we worked with Wide Open Walls to help paint the building adjacent to the lot. We want to further beautify the lot by having more art projects, one of them being painting the parking dividers a neon blue. We will also be adding light features, but with the help of local artists make them an art feature as well. At the events, we want to offer, we hope to use the funds to purchase games, such as; corn hole to add to the community experience.

We are also planning to use repurposed and up-cycled materials to create a community garden and seating area. It’s very important to us to create a space that’s functional, sustainable but also allowing for artistic expression. That’s what we hope to accomplish by using repurposed materials to create the garden space as well as art features and seating for the community area. The ultimate goal is to work with local food entrepreneurs to help launch their businesses while also providing community access to more food options.

The Steps

  • Bring everyone in- celebrate!
  • Weekend 1, three projects teams by three different individuals (Project leads: art/lighting, furniture and plants) Purchase materials, scheduling of local artists
  • Weekend 2, install
  • Weekend 3, install
  • Weekend 4, final touches and completion

Why we‘re doing it

Currently, there is no central community space in this area that people frequent. Oftentimes public spaces, at least in the immediate area, are underutilized. There is no other space within walking distance that intends to provide games, art, and food experiences to the local community. It has been shown that art projects help to promote interaction in a public space, engage the youth, and promote expression and creativity.  We hope to accomplish this, as well as, bringing the community together in space that they can enjoy for years to come.
