About the project
Skate Free would like to develop the defunct and under used spaced under the I-95 free way at the MPA Lot 11. We would like to create a 40,000 sq. ft mix use skate plaza and green space that offers a useful urban environment promoting physical activity, gathering of families/friends, and community connectivity. Skateboarders and families in Downtown Miami are underserved with public space to play and enjoy. Skate free would like to transform an otherwise neglected piece of land that serves only parking and transform this space into a mixed use green space and concrete skate plaza that will engage the kids of Miami to skate in a legal, safe and innovative environment.
The Steps
We will have to get a long term lease for the land from the FDOT for the lot. Then from there we must extensivley fundraise from all private and public channels to get the project completely funded. After, funding is completed we will begin pre contruction where we will pull all permits, complete engineering and site preperation. Finally, we will begin contruction and prep for opening.
Why we‘re doing it
Skateboarders and families in Downtown Miami are underserved with public space to play and enjoy. This space sits at the convergence of three Miami neighborhoods including Park West, Overtown and Miami River. These communities lack quality public spaces and are incredibly vulnerable to the risk of drugs and violent crime. Transforming an otherwise neglected piece of land that serves only parking and transform this space into a public plaza will engage the kids of Miami to skate in a legal, safe and innovative environment. This public/ private partnership will mobilized the motionless public effort to create more outdoor spaces.
