About the project
We understand that seniors and veterans are amongst a population subject to inequity and neglect--depending on their mobility and capacity. Sometimes this population is one in the same, singled out as ill-equipped to re-enter society because of their experiences or new found ability. We want to make sure that they are not forgotten and are supported on the front lines during the pandemic spread of novel Coronavirus/COVID-19.
Deeply Rooted Produce is a local food distribution hub with a mission to increase the distribution of high quality produce without sacrificing quality for lower price. More than ever before we feel that it is instrumental for us to provide our services. In addition to growing our own produce, we are supplied by local farmers and local food manufacturers to supply Detroiters with the best quality food possible. We work hand to hand with growers to provide populations of low income and increased vulnerability with well-deserved nutrition.
To enhance our mission, we have increased specific services exclusively for elders aged 55+ and veterans with a Department of Defense (DoD) Identification card, Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC), Veteran ID Card (VIC), or designation of their state-issued driver's license/ID will qualify for this service (in addition to access to our other services). The goal of this service is to provide the highest quality food during times of uncertainty. Included in these services, we would provide 3 pre-packaged meals, 3 recipes with the ingredients and recipe card, and 5 citrus fruit items of much benefit to the immune system.
The Steps
Once we have cash in hand we will purchase the needed equipment and supplies that match our outlined budget and will package orders for delivery. Orders will be taken on a rolling basis and will continue until late October/early November.
Why we‘re doing it
According to the CDC's website, the majority of the Covid-19 cases are in the population of individuals 46-64 years old. When considering Governor Witmer's ‘Stay at Home Order’, it is imperative that this vulnerable population only come outside when absolutely necessary. Leaving the house for groceries is something that is absolutely necessary but we want to exchange gas and time for security and guarentee. Many grocery stores are reported to be out of stock of essential items and/or decreasing the amount of items that they stock on their shelves. In Detroit alone, stores have also reported deaths of employees due to the virus. We want to make sure that gas and time is not wasted on uncertainty by providing this home delivery service.
