About the project

Our project is to help gets lights to all cyclist in lower income neighborhoods. Not being seeing at night is quite dangerous especially when sharing the road with cars. Those in lower income neighborhoods use bicycles as their main means of transportation and are usually riding without lights. Our hope is to get out to as many cyclist every year and hand out lights to those that need them. In the process of handing out lights we will also over some safety advance to help them on their daily commute.

The Steps

To make this happen we were lucky to get a kick start on light from the League of American Cyclist for 100 lights. Our goal is to get lots more lights and be able to hand out lights all year to cyclist we find without lights in lower income neighborhoods.

We would start of by working with the Urban Bicycle Food Ministry in that uses bicycles to deliver food to those in need. In working with them we will find cyclist along the route that we find with no light. We will approach them and ask if they would be interested in lights. While installing them we will talk about safety and get to know them.

Why we‘re doing it

We are doing this as we see many commuter riding with our lights and recently a cyclist was killed in South Memphis. We feel if this cyclist/commuter had lights he would have been more visible to motorist and lived to ride another day.
