About the project
The Let's Get Physical! Fitness Series began 3 years ago to further the mission of Price Hill Will by improving the quality of life for Price Hill residents through positive healthy living choices. This project has made positive connections with many residents regardless of age, ethnicity or socio-economic status, and has proven itself successful in making it easy to access free classes for wellness and social connection 5 to 6 days a week. The classes include yoga, Latin Dance with direction in Spanish and English and Zumba, and we are hoping to add a cardio/strength class. Class participants range from school age children to seniors. Price Hill Will has collaborated with a variety of organizations to host classes; the class locations are specifically spread throughout Price Hill to create easy access to the diverse population from typical car-owning homeowners to just-arrived immigrant families who are walking or biking for primary transportation. Now, a resident-led initiative, this series is entering a new and exciting phase. Over the last year, the program has grown from being a summertime sampler to year-round classes, including school-based classes for Cincinnati Public School children.
It is our goal to continue engaging more people through current classes and responding to needs for additional and/or more diverse healthy choices. Funds will be used to purchase needed equipment and hire professional fitness instructors.
The Steps
Purchase needed equipment
Engage instructors and schedule classes
Outreach/publicity through the Price Hill Will website, email, social media and other media outlets, use of signage during class and postcard handouts to class participants and local businesses to promote the Summer series of this program
Ask class participants to share their story of how the classes have impacted them and encourage them to bring neighbors
Ongoing outreach/publicity about the program throughout the year as needed
Ongoing fundraising efforts for donations, grants and sponsorships to sustain the program
Why we‘re doing it
Our mission is to create systemic change in Price Hill through equitable physical, civic, social, and economical development that improves the qualtiy of life for all families in our community. In the last 3 years, we have brought together men, women and children of diverse backgrounds through these wellness and social activities. The regular schedule and varying locations allow for easy access for all whether you are a 7 year old walking to class or an 84 year old riding a public bus to join the class. This is all important because Price Hill has been identified as a community in need. According to Interact for Health, 3 out of 10 Price Hill residents are obese or have been told they have high blood pressure or depression, and 2 out of 10 have asthma, high cholesterol or heart trouble. According to a 2017 Community Health Assessment by the City of Cincinnati, researchers were able to establish a Community Need Index (CNI), an assessment to determine vulnerable communities in Hamilton County. It showed three neighborhoods that had the greatest need were within the City of Cincinnati limits, one of which was Price Hill. We strive to be part of the solution for building a healthier community.
