In 2019, Latinas en Bici - a cycling group in Northwest Arkansas - was started by Olivia Barraza. She wanted to provide a place where people like her could feel represented and have a sense of connection and belonging. The cycling community needed more diversity, and women like her could utilize the space, creating an opportunity to experience the support and liberation endemic to cycling. Thus, Latinas en Bici has a mission to welcome and educate Latina women into the world of cycling.
the steps
- Meet with our current Latinx leaders to select which of our certified instructors will lead the classes
- Create a standard operating procedure/manual covering; safety, course content, familiarization and follow-up
- Further promote our project through social media and word of mouth to reach our target audience
- Secure an open space away from any external dangers such as vehicles, other cyclists, trail walkers/runners, etc
- Provide snacks, bikes, helmets, and hydration for participants

why we're doing it
Latinas en Bici wants to impact the NWA community through cycling and choosing healthier and happier lifestyles. The goal is to help educate an empower Latinx women who have never ridden a bike or just aren't comfortable to gain the knowledge and build confidence as cyclists and break the traditional barriers within the community regarding physical fitness and outdoor recreation. Our impact goes beyond the women we serve, it impacts all of our familias
