Language in the Community
Queens Botanical Garden intends to obtain an Apple iPad to run an application called Google Translate. Our visitors come from all over the globe, speaking languages other than English.
About the project
Queens Botanical Garden is an urban oasis where people, plants and cultures are celebrated through inspiring gardens, innovative educational programs and demonstrations of environmental stewardship. Being in the heart of Queens, the most diverse county in America, many of our visitors speak a language other than English. By providing a means to communicate our mission and commitment for a stronger and sustainable environment this project would help us reach larger audiences.
The Steps
- Raise funds to obtain an Apple IPad installed with Google Translate.
- Secure an iPad lockable display case and house the device in the lobby of the Visitor and Administration Building.
- Train front desk attendants and staff with correct usage of the device and the translator application.
Why we‘re doing it
Queens Botanical Garden rests in the most diverse county in America. During a visit to the Garden, one can hear languages such as Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, Hindi, Punjabi, Spanish and Russian being spoken while strolling through the wonderfully displayed gardens. Providing a means to communicate our love of plants, people and cultures to our guests would further strengthen our commitment to our community.
