About the project
Lampblack is a community of Black poets, storytellers, critics, and creatives committed to fighting inequity and injustice in the literary community and at large. Together, we strive to support Black writers and increase engagement with their work.
In April 2021 we launched our Direct Aid fund to support Black writers impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout the sumer of 2021, we hosted a reading series featuring Black literature and conducted writing workshops to encourage Black writers. Most recently, we launched our Founder's Issue, which features the work of founding members of Lampblack.
We are back, fundraising for 2022!
The Steps
2022 Goals
- Enhance our direct aid program for Black writers and distribute $10,000 in funds
- Publish the work of established and emerging Black writers
- Grow the Lampblack community through dedicated programing
- Hire 3 part-time employees and lay the groundwork for a sustainable organization
Why we‘re doing it
Racial Equity. Community Action. Diversity of Thought. The Written Word. Lampblack was founded on these four principles last year amidst a global pandemic and civil protests. We believe that Black voices should be at the center of conversations about inequity and injustice in the literary community and at large. But too often Black writers are overcome by hardships of being Black before we can make our voices heard. We’re here to ensure, in whatever way we can, that Black writers can continue speaking truth to power in their writing and in their lives.
