About the project

The annual Kids Grand Concourse Halloween Extravaganza aims to positively impact the social-emotional wellbeing of our low-income community of mostly Black & Brown residents in the South Bronx through this free locally organized event. After running the last few celebrations in local co-ops and neighborhood parks, we are scaling up our small Halloween festival with performances and activities for kids aged 4 & up at the historical Andrew Freedman Home on Saturday, October 30th! After a challenging year and a half due to the Covid-19 pandemic, our roster of activities includes a haunted house tour, spooky performances, and ghoulish games to bring cheer and provide stress relief to those who need it most.

The Steps

A 9-member volunteer steering committee of local South Bronx neighbors is tasked with organizing event logistics, securing funding, and forming partnerships with local organizations and businesses to ensure that this event is a success. The initiative is spearheaded by local parks organization Friends of 4 Parks Alliance, Inc.

Why we‘re doing it

We’re a group of neighborhood residents who’ve been organizing an annual community Halloween arts and crafts party for mostly low-income kids of color over the past three years.  We felt this post-lockdown year called for something bigger, a real infusion of community fun and joy! We strongly believe that our Black & Brown youth especially deserve more enriching and free engagement in activities that instill pride in the South Bronx and foster a sense of community spirit. This event is specifically intended to inspire our youth to take pride in their local landmarks, participate in skill-building activities, and feel a sense of community through social engagement.
