About the project
Music is a powerful tool that fosters community, belonging and learning. Help us shine a light on the diversity and creativity of Kensington/Windsor Terrace by supporting multicultural music programming in the East 4th Street Community Garden, all performed by local artists. Through the successful “Here Comes the Sun” solar celebration, we have already enjoyed the music of the Brooklyn Bluegrass Collective, Mariachi Nuevo Sol, and Roberto Poveda, Music of the Cuban Troubadour. And now our music is powered by a solar system donated by Brooklyn SolarWorks. Funding this project will allow us to offer fair compensation to musical and spoken word artists—a key factor in ensuring that a wide-variety of voices and styles is represented in the garden—for late summer/fall events and beyond. And thanks to IOBY and the Partnership for Parks, every dollar you donate will be matched by a dollar!
The Steps
As we plan events for the rest of summer, fall (September and October--a beautiful time of year in the garden!), we are aiming to feature 3-6 more performance artists. We will use outreach channels, conducted in languages including Spanish, Bengali and Urdu, to connect with new artists and audiences. We are also building capacity to host a music series next year--all in support of the garden’s mission to become an essential Kensington resource, offering repose and a place of celebration to every member of our diverse neighborhood using arts and culture, education and the beauty of nature.
Why we‘re doing it
As an open, communal space in the neighborhood, we are in a unique position to create opportunities for all neighbors to connect and share experiences through music and spoken word.
