the project

We believe that Pittsburghers should be able to see and experience the beauty of our city!

We believe every building has a story and it needs to be told. So, every year we throw the doors open to dozens of iconic buildings and re-imagined new spaces across multiple neighborhoods throughout the year.

We invite Pittsburghers – and Pittsburghers-for-the-day -- to celebrate our diverse architecture and our collective heritage.

We’re a nonprofit run by just one person who leads hundreds of volunteers to help you celebrate Pittsburgh!

We want you to embrace your nebbiness! But we can only open our city’s doors with the support of donors big and small. Will you join us?

Right now your donation is DOUBLED to keep our doors open to all!  (Up to the $5,000 match).

the steps

DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh is best known for our annual event in October, Doors Open Pittsburgh, where we invite you inside a large and diverse collection of buildings for behind-the-scenes access, some unique experience or just the opportunity to explore.

But we also offer monthly tours, bur or walking, and events!  We call these Specialty Tours, and the themes range from history, art, culture, and general interest – with that patented DOORS OPEN twist!

Due to COVID-19, we have now expanded to include our virtual tours of Pittsburgh's history, DOP Stories: A Virtual storytelling Experience.  This re-branded series will re-launch on November 2, with Music Week…we could all use a song in our heart this year!

Past examples have been:

Houses of Freedom: Firsthand stories of how the black church has stood as the institution to build community, family, justice, and freedom.

Freedom Seekers: Pittsburgh's underground railroad stories at historic safe houses.

Antique Skyscrapers: Hear the amazing stories behind these multi-stories of yesteryear and the tycoons who commissioned them.

Intersections of Faith: Churches, synagogues, temples, and mosques: Pittsburgh prays tour.

Vintage Purses: We will talk about the swankiest parties in Pittsburgh, speakeasy raids, fashion icons and Hollywood royalty.

October Doors Open Pittsburgh: Dozens of buildings Downtown and on the Northside open their doors with volunteers to share our history.

why we're doing it

We do this work because we want to invite everyone to appreciate and to celebrate Pittsburgh’s variant architecture and unique heritage by providing visual storytelling INSIDE iconic and re-imagined buildings.

We do this with the help of hundreds of volunteers who welcome Pittsburghers — and anyone visiting our city — learn in a fun format!

We do this because every building has a story and it needs to be told!

Can you help us to continue telling those stories?
