the project
I've always felt the desire to connect people by celebrating our differences and The Tree of Life lends itself nicely to this concept.
Even though Sharpsburg is only a mile on the map, it's culture and history is huge and I would like to have the people of Sharpsburg celebrate their differences. This is what I hope to accomplish with the completion of The Kathleen Trew Swazuk Memorial Mural
the steps
Install a rain barrel system
Paint the rest of the Tree
Add a chart with all the symbolism
Add a plaque for Kathleen Trew Swazuk
why we're doing it
When we began the mural, we simply wanted to celebrate our differences, but in light of the climate of diversity as of late, we feel it is our duty to help people understand how important it is to celebrate each other

During those times when I felt like giving up on this project even when the completion seemed impossible, Kathy wouldn't let me. Being a true soldier, the ideal of inclusion of all people represented by the Tree of Life in the mural was not only something she believed in, but something she was willing to fight for.
There were days where she would call and say, "Pam, I just finished my breathing treatment and I'm on my way to the mural. Are you going to be there?"
Even if I wasn't planning to be there, I would be there. How could I not?
Kathy was an army nurse in the Vietnam War and suffered from agent orange disease yet, she was so full of hope and light, I missed all the signs of her time to transition into the Spirit World.
I can't make up for the times I should have been a better friend, but I will always remember how great a friend she was to me.
