the project

During the annual Belt Line Community Spring Festival on April 18, in addition to the usual clean-up, fix-up, and fun acitivities, volunteers from the neighborhood and the city of Memphis will plant 25 trees. Jacob Ladder and its many volunteers have worked very hard to clean up numerous vacant and overgrown lots. The final step in this effort is to plant trees that will enhance the appearance of the neighborhood while providing much needed shade.

the steps

A Master Gardener friend of Jacobs Ladder has selected the trees and plantings, worked out planting locations and made arrangements with a local plant nursery for purchase and delivery prior to planting day. Prior to the Festival, volunteers will till the ground and prep it for planting on April 18

why we're doing it

The Belt Line Community has long been an area of blight and neglect. While there are many home owners who take excellent care of their homes and property, there are many boarded up houses and vacant lots used for dumping. Jacobs Ladder has worked dilligently to renovate existing homes and clean up vacant lots. The ultimate goal is to provide a neighborhood that is safe for children to walk to school and play and also to provide a sense of pride for the home owners and tenants.
