The Dog Run at J. Hood Wright Park opened in 2011. Since then, dog ownership in the community has sky-rocketed. In addition to being a place that dogs can run free and play, it is a source of real community among dog owners in the area. While the high usage has furthered the sense of community in the area, the dog run's infrastructure has struggled in the face of years of neglect. We are raising money to backfill the gravel, which over the course of 10 years has eroded considerably. This will make the dog run cleaner, less dusty, more sanitary and safer. We will also use the money to purchase permanent trash cans and plants to replace the dying rose plants.
the steps
Once the money is raised, we will procure the additional gravel and trash cans through the NYC Parks Department (who will coordinate delivery and lay the gravel). Separately, we will find dog safe plants that can survive the NYC climate, and purchase and plant those.
why we're doing it
We're motivated to improve the dog run for two reasons. First, we love our dogs and want them to enjoy the company of other pups and to be able to play safely and sanitarily. Second, an improved dog run will increase usage and create a more comfortable place for dog owners to create community in Upper Manhattan.
