  • LIVE HEALTHY! GOAL: INCREASE FRUITS & VEGETABLE CONSUMPTION IN THE SOUTH BRONX

  • LIVE HEALTHY! METHOD: REINFORCE NUTRITION EDUCATION BY PROVIDING HEALTH BUCK COUPONS TO BE USED FOR FRESH FRUITS & VEGETABLES AT THE FARMER'S MARKET.

  • HOW YOUR SUPPORT WILL HELP OTHERS: EACH $2 CONTRIBUTION WILL TURN DIRECTLY INTO A $2 HEALTHBUCK PROVIDING FAMILIES WITH GREATER ACCESS TO FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES IN THE SOUTH BRONX

Last year, NY Common Pantry's LIVE HEALTHY! program found that providing Health Bucks, $2 coupons that can be used to purchase fresh produce at NYC Greenmarkets, were incredibly impactful on the attendees of our workshops and their families. Many shared that they felt encouraged to cook with more fresh produce after sampling our recipe of the week, and Health Bucks granted them the financial flexiblity to purchase a new food item.

This year, to build on last year's success, we would like to provide attendees with 2 Health Bucks each, equaling $4, which is enough to purchase the fresh produce at the market that they will need to prepare the recipe of the day for a family of four. By increasing purchasing power with these Health Bucks, we were able to empower people to help increase their family's fruit and vegetable intake as well as increase business for the local farmers at the market.

This initiative is part of the Eat Smart New York program funded by the New York Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance. Through the LIVE HEALTHY! program NY Common Pantry provides free nutrition education to adults, children, and seniors who are eligible to receive resources through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), along with creating healthy policy, systems, and environmental changes.

For a second year in a row, we have partnered with GrowNYC to provide nutrition and culinary workshops at the Lincoln Hospital Greenmarket in the South Bronx every Tuesday and Friday from mid-July through the end of October.

Your donation will impact the lives of many people like Carmen, who first began visiting the Lincoln Greenmarket last year. Unsure of what to expect, she considered the produce to be a little pricey and was uncertain about purchasing it. However, one day she happened to notice the big Live Healthy! tent, started making it part of her routine to stop by every week and truly feels like the Health Bucks have helped her make small changes at home: “The best take away for me is that I learned to appreciate the time I spent on my health, even five minutes.”

the steps

PROJECT DATES: JULY to NOVEMBER 3, 2017

We start our nutrition education classes at the Lincoln Hospital Greenmarket mid-July. We will have our own small supply of Health Bucks to help get us through the first three weeks of a 17 week project. These are provided to us through a grant from the City of New York.

Once we receive the added Health Bucks purchased with funds from our ioby campaign, we will immediately begin using them at our workshops on both Tuesdays and Thursdays, providing each attendee with 2 Health Bucks, equaling $4. These will are able to spend on fresh produce at the Greenmarket, throughout our season ending on November 3.

Each dollar contributed during the campaign will be a dollar that goes straight into the FRESH PRODUCE budget of a South Bronx household!

why we're doing it

According to Data2Go, in the Mott Haven area of the South Bronx, 26% of the residents are food insecure (vs 15% NYC-wide), 23% did not eat fruits or vegetables the day before the survey (vs 12% NYC-wide), and 31.7% are obese (23% across NYC). The reality is that for many families after receiving nutrition education, purchasing high quality, fresh produce is out of their financial reach. Either they do not have the financial resources to purchase the fresh fruits and vegetables after purchasing enough staples for their family members, or they do not have the discretionary income to gamble on purchasing novel items on the chance that their family will not like the recipe and won’t eat it.

Providing Health Bucks will help to change that and hopefully be part of the spark that transforms their health and life. At NY Common Pantry, this touches upon three of our core principles: options, access and health. We believe in reducing hunger and food insecurity through a whole-person approach that includes not just nutritious, fresh food pantry packages (which our members do receive!), but also through empowering community members and increasing access by connecting them to resources, as well as educating on the importance of a nutritionally sound diet and active living in order to make healthier choices for their families through the Live Healthy! program.
