About the project
In 2022, we premiered the idea of a performance tour, immersing audiences into an area to learn its history and challenges from an environmental perspective and to share visions for an equitable and resilient future. This project furthers the concept and is presented as part of the Brooklyn Utopia's exhibit focusing on Gowanus, a rapid changing area in Brooklyn within which Artichoke Dance Company has been working for nearly a decade. This next iteration will bring audiences to off the beaten path locations and involve them in Gowanus history and futures.
The Steps
We are already planning the tour route and working with partners to secure sites. Rehearsal begin in May and tours are given in June.
Why we‘re doing it
The Gowanus Canal, New York City's first superfund site due to decades of toxic polluting, is currently being remediated. The rezoning of Gowanus was secure last year with many community benefits negotiated. The area is rapidly changing and this performance tour brings audiences into the rapidly changing landscape and conversation.
