the project

The funding will be used to purchase and upcycle used shipping containers to create "One Stop Drop" a recycling and eco education center on the Wagner Houses campus.

The center will provide opportunities for residents to recycle used electronics and textiles, as well as, drop off food scraps for composting, redeem deposit bottles and much more.

It will also serve as an anchor where the community can gather and explore environmental issues, engage in problem solving, and take action to improve the environment.

Our goal is to improve waste equity and help transform marginalized communities like NYCHA, by enabling them to fully participate in and contribute towards creating a cleaner, greener environment and more sustainable future for all of us.

the steps

ICGT will purchase and convert two used shipping containers into a thriving sustainability center for NYC public housing residents.

why we're doing it

Currently, over 500,000 NYCHA residents don't have access to participate in NYC programs to recycle electronics and textiles or compost food waste.

Organics alone make up about 40% of NYC's waste stream and the methane produced when landfilled is one of the major contributors to global warming.

If we are to successfully tackle NYC’s waste problems and reduce its carbon footprint, it is imperative that we fully include all New Yorkers.

ICGT’s One Stop Drop Recycling and Eco Education Center will enable us to implement and support deep education and engagement with NYC's marginalized public housing residents around issues of sustainability.

It will also allow us to develop the capacity to better service this community by creating more equitable access and opportunities to capture and divert valuable resources that would otherwise, be lost to landfills.

Our aim with this center is to create an active culture of sustainability on campus and develop a platform for continuous effort towards both mitigating climate change and improving waste equity at NYCHA.

One Stop Drop Recycling and Eco Education Center.

ICGT’s “Waste Salvation Station”, a one stop drop recycling and eco education center, will not only allow us to help support and implement deep education and engagement with NYCHA residents, but it will also directly provide an environmental benefit by expanding the opportunities for NYCHA residents to divert more items from the waste stream that are compostable, recyclable, and reusable like food scraps, electronics, and textiles. If we are to successfully tackle NYCHA’s and NYC’s waste problems and reduce its carbon footprint, it is imperative that we begin to develop the capacity to capture these materials. Food scraps alone make up about 40% of NYCHA’s waste stream and the methane they produce when landfilled is one of the major contributors to global warming. A community’s commitment to a cleaner environment is often considered to reflect its commitment to a higher quality of living and our aim with this center is to create a platform for continuous effort towards both climate resiliency, equity at the level of a NYCHA development and a cleaner greener environment. Ultimately, our goal is to build a model that is replicable across NYCHA and in affordable housing in general, that is transferable to other cities in the US and beyond.
