the project
The Decatur Howard Saratoga Block Association is looking to improve on our Open Streets Program this year. For the past two summers, our block has been closed to cars on Saturday's to offer an open space for block residence to gather, play and connect. This year, we are looking make this regular community event even better by staffing the happening with an Operations Manager. The Operations Manager will be responsible for overseeing block beautification, offering ease of access for all residents and supporting kid's activities.
the steps
In preparation for the 2023 season, we will order new, clearer signage to accompany the closure barriers. The signs will explicitly state the access rules as well as include an access number to call for any individuals needed assistance with the metal barriers.
The Open Streets Committee of the DHS Block Association will ensure the the Operations Manager position is filled by an individual able to complete presented tasks.
The Open Streets Committee will purchase and distribute sports equipment, block beautification elements (such as flowers, tree pit fences, planters) to interested residents.
The Open Streets Committee will collect information from residents to best select programming for the community.
why we're doing it
The Open Streets Program has been an opportunity for connection both during COVID and beyond. The street's closure presents an opportunity for connection, community and shared experience while kids play and neighbors chat and relax in an informal, car free environment.
