the project

With the money raised for the Imhotep STEM Lab of Avalon Village, the Lumens Foundation hopes to create a state-of-the-art STEM education facility that provides Highland Park, MI youth with access to cutting-edge technology and hands-on learning experiences. The Imhotep STEM Lab will be a safe space for children to learn, explore and create, fostering a love of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) that can inspire future careers and opportunities.

The Lumens Foundation hopes that the Imhotep STEM Lab will help to close the achievement gap in STEM education for underserved youth, particularly those in Highland Park, MI. By providing access to quality STEM education and resources, the foundation hopes to improve the social and economic prospects of the community, creating a pipeline of skilled workers in STEM fields that can drive future economic growth and prosperity. Ultimately, the goal is to create a more equitable and just society, where all children have the opportunity to reach their full potential.

the steps

A list of actions that will be taken to transform the converted 40ft solar powered shipping container into a state-of-the-art STEM lab where children can be inspired to pursue careers in STEM disciplines:

  2. Research and source the necessary equipment and resources within the allocated budget.
  3. Hire contractors, if necessary, to handle any construction, renovation, or installation work required to set up the lab.
  4. Purchase and install the necessary equipment, furniture, and supplies to create a functional and engaging STEM learning environment.
  5. Develop a curriculum for the lab that aligns with state and national STEM education standards and incorporates hands-on, project-based learning.
  6. Hire and train qualified STEM instructors to lead classes and workshops in the lab.
  7. Launch the STEM lab and begin offering classes and workshops to local children and youth.

  3.  Hire and train STEM instructors to lead classes and workshops in the lab.
  4.  Launch the STEM lab and begin offering classes and workshops to local children and youth.

why we're doing it

The introduction of the Imhotep STEM Lab at Avalon Village in Highland Park, MI helps solve several social and economic problems in the community. Highland Park has a history of economic challenges, with a declining population and limited employment opportunities. The Imhotep STEM Lab provides a valuable resource to the community, offering young people access to technology, education, and skills training that can help them build brighter futures.

The lab also addresses environmental issues in the community. Avalon Village is a grassroots organization that works to reclaim abandoned properties and turn them into green spaces and community resources. The Imhotep STEM Lab is a key part of this effort, providing an educational space that is sustainable and eco-friendly. The lab features solar panels and other green technologies that help reduce the community's carbon footprint while also providing valuable job training in the growing field of clean energy.

Overall, the Imhotep STEM Lab at Avalon Village is an innovative solution to multiple challenges facing the community. By providing access to education, technology, and sustainability, it is helping to create a brighter future for young people in Highland Park. The partnership between The Lumens Foundation and Avalon Village is a powerful example of what can be achieved through collaboration and commitment to positive change.
