The Day Plaza is a space where people experiencing homelessness may rest during the day. The plaza will be adjacent to the City's first barrier-free women's shelter and will address the current lack of safe places where people experiencing homelessness may relax. Phase one of the Day Plaza installing shade structures and seating.
Phase one of the Day Plaza will be constructed at 501 Washington beginning this summer. The remaining phases of the Day Plaza and the barrier-free women's shelter on the same site will be under construction from late 2019 through spring 2020.
The number of safe places in Memphis where people experiencing homeless can rest during the day are inadequate, leaving them exposed to the violence of the streets as well as the elements in the summer and the winter. With a lack of emergency and transitional shelters (especially for women and children), no access to public restrooms (there are none in Memphis) and limited barrier-free intake and counseling services, Memphis is called to do better by those individuals experiencing homelessness.
